Project Preparation

3D GHG

virtualcitySYSTEMS and GFZ integrate energy data obtained from real-estate platforms (ImmobilienScout24) into 3D city models. By combining energy relevant data (energy consumption resp. energy demand) with emission factors it is possible to calculate the specific CO2) emissions per building. Based on the 3D city model, these emissions are visualized to provide a better overall understanding of emissions for decision makers and the general public.

virtualcitySYSTEMS  and its academic partner GFZ are developing geo-spatial tools for the LoCaL project in order to integrate spatial GHG data in everyday planning processes of cities, a prerequisite for effective implementation of climate mitigation measures.

In this project virtualcitySYSTEMS and GFZ integrate energy data obtained from real-estate platforms (ImmobilienScout24) into 3D city models. By combining energy relevant data (energy consumption resp. energy demand) with emission factors it is possible to calculate the specific CO2) emissions per building. Based on the 3D city model these emissions are visualized to give easy access for decision makers and the general public. In addition, scenarios (e.g. changing energy carrier) can be calculated. Moreover, it is planned to integrate the automatic creation of GHG reportings (e.g. GPC) into the tool.

In general, CityGML based 3D city models are used as the foundation for data integration and visualization. Since CityGML is an international standard, the developed approaches can be adopted to any city easily, given a CityGML based city model.

virtualcitySYSTEMS and GFZ are looking for cities and city based organizations who want to better understand and monitor their current emission levels and implement mitigation strategies.

Achievements

The GFZ successfully took part with the project at the hackathon ‘#Berlin3D – Hacking Berlin’s City Model’ [1] in Summer 2015. The aim of the hackathon was to experiment with the open data of the 3D city model to find new areas of application. The prototype and presentation of the GFZ got great attention.
